Performing CPR during Covid-19

When someone has a cardiac arrest they need someone to perform CPR immediately. There are small changes to how we can give it to minimise the risk of infection during the Covid 19 pandemic. The risk is small and without vital CPR, the person in cardiac arrest will not survive.

We've updated our guidance in line with the Resuscitation Council UK.

If you find someone unconscious and not breathing normally follow these simple steps:

Step 1: Shake and shout for help.
Step 2: Call 999.
Step 3: Don't put your face close to theirs. If you think there's risk of infection, use a towel or a piece of clothing and lay it over their mouth and nose.
Step 4: Give chest compressions.
Step 5: Continue until an ambulance arrives.
Step 6: After the ambulance have taken over wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water or use an alcohol based hand gel.

Accessing the AED

The defibrillator is locked in a cabinet on the outside wall of The Percy Arms - the cabinet is climate controlled to ensure the battery and pads do not become too cold, and the device does not attract any undesireable interferance.

The code to the lock is held by the North East Ambulance Service who will tell you the code in response to a 999 call. Once you tell the operator you are dealing with a collapse in Chatton, they will know there is a Public Access Defibrillator in the village and prompt you to gain access.
